It is not just a simple firm, but it is a farming community unique in the world, born in Egypt, from the desert sand, to 70 kilometers from Cairo.
A so extraordinary reality to be considered a model of social-economical enterprise, an example of how an economy based on principles of solidarity and transparency could develop an healthy social structure and a vital culture. The Sekem foundation was in 1977: 70 hectares of desert that Abuleish bought from the Govern, today transformed in luxuriant and fertile soils following the biodynamic rules, delimited by a thick belt of perfumed trees.
Two thousand people work in Sekem, involved in six different activities: horticulture, livestock breeding, cultivation of cotton and cereals, aromatic herbs, processing plants for foodstuff, clothing and pharmaceuticals. Beautiful white buildings host the schools: from nursery to secondary school, from vocational training centers to literacy schools for adults. For health care are provided an ambulatory, the medical centre and an ambulance that goes around to the villages teaching hygiene and prevention. And about entertainment, parties and music, there is a theatre rising on a hill.
