COSMOS is the new European Standard for Organic and Natural Cosmetics.
Into force since September 2009, is the result of a long path of studies and researches that allowed ICEA to confront itself on the same level with historical and main European certifiers: Ecocert and Cosmebio (France), BdiH (Germany), Soil Association (UK), Bioforum (Belgium).
Cosmos, as a matter of fact, establishes characteristics for natural cosmetics in Europe.
To obtain certification, its necessary to know the application of green chemistry principles, while the nanotechnology use is severely limited, at least until more info on possible side effects will be available.
These new and very strict European standards involve two different certification levels: one for organic products (Cosmos Organic), and one for natural products (Cosmos Natural).
Cosmos Organic requires that must be organic at least the 95% of ingredients that can be extracted with simple physical actions, and at least 20% on the total of finished products, considering also water. Differently from that, Cosmos Natural product should not contain more than 2% of synthetic raw materials.
For a cosmetic product that is guarantee and of high quality its requested the respect of animalist and environmental requirements with a common language, that covers from the definitions of different categories of cosmetic ingredients to calculations to quantify different organic, natural, or residue petrochemicals percentage (this latter could in no case be over 2%).
