Aquaculture is among the activities of food production with the highest growth rate worldwide.
The current exceeding of sea fishing sustainable limits, the topic of “animal welfare”, together with the problem of safety and quality of products and the safeguard of marine environment, made IFOAM, international body of referral for organic productions (www.ifoam.org), approve a standard also for organic aquaculture.
ICEA, involved also in sustainable fishing projects in the Mediterranean basin for the development of a safe and ethical fishing sector, is active in this field since 2004 with a voluntary standard for organic aquaculture. Since July 2010 entered into force in Europe Reg. 710/2009 that abrogates previous standards. New European regulation for organic aquaculture highlights the importance of the sector and indicates an important strategy for the development of European sustainable fishing. Some Italian companies already took this opportunity, being controlled and certified by ICEA for organic aquaculture activities.
