By ”typical products” we mean all the products that either obtained protected designation of origin and protected geographical indications within the meaning of Regulation (EEC) No. 2081/92, or protected traditional character within the meaning of Regulation (EEC) No. 2082/92.
The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is granted to the agricultural products and foodstuffs all the stages of which (i.e. production, processing, ageing, packaging) take place in a limited and defined geographical area from which they take their name and whose characteristics, specified in an appropriate standard, are due to that particular geographical environment and its inherent natural and human factors.
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is granted to the agricultural products and foodstuffs one or more stages of which (i.e. production, processing, ageing, packaging) take place in a defined geographical area from which they take their name. Such stages must be the essential ones that give the products their particular characteristics specified in the appropriate standard.
The Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) indication is granted to the agricultural products and foodstuffs obtained with traditional processing methods, in order to safeguard their specific character. While with PDO and PGI it is the product that is protected by the EU, with TSG it is the traditional recipe that is recognized and protected.
ICEA, Istituto per la Certificazione Etica e Ambientale, the most prominent organic certification body in Italy, has enlarged the scope of its activity to encompass the certification of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG). The ministerial decree whereby ICEA was registered in the list of private certification bodies authorized to inspect and certify in the above sectors, was published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale No. 139 of 16 June 2004.
When designated by the producers, ICEA will prepare and submit to the Ministry of Agriculture (MIPAF) an inspection plan for the products considered, based on the requirements of the specific standards and complying with the Ministry’s rules.
Thanks to its independence, expertise and adequate resources, ICEA is in a position to fully meet requirements.
